Virginia Important Bird Areas Program

presented
by Aimee J. Welden

The Important Bird Areas (IBA) program is a global effort to protect vulnerable bird species by identifying the areas most important to sustaining bird populations worldwide. This program comes at a time when habitat loss and fragmentation have caused significant declines in nearly 30% of American bird species. In an attempt to reverse these trends, the National Audubon Society has joined with Birdlife International, and the over 150 countries currently participating, to implement the IBA program in the United States. The program uses standardized science-based criteria to identify and conserve areas of critical importance to nesting, wintering, or migrating birds. To date, more than 10,000 sites have been identified as IBAs, many with conservation programs in place. Virginia began its IBA program in 2002 and is well on its way to establishing a network of important sites across the state. Twelve IBAs have already been recognized by the IBA Technical Committee, covering more than 6% of Virginia. Ultimately, these sights will be targeted for conservation and monitoring activities to improve the health of habitats and the birds that occupy them. IBAs are a great conservation tool that can guide land use decisions and bolster support to save our most important places for birds.
