Come join the Buchanan County Bird Club as we search a reclaimed strip
mine site in Buchanan County for migrant and winter
sparrows. Last year we had ten different species of sparrow (or
twelve if you count Junco and Towhee). In 2003 we found a
Henslow's Sparrow and last year had great looks through the scope of a
group of Vesper Sparrows. We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the
junction of Rt. 643 and Rt. 646 (i.e. the gravel lot at the mouth of
Guesses Fork) and then will proceed to the home of
Billy Ray and Shirley Justus on the right hand fork of Guesses Fork
(Gray Hawk Drive).

We will carpool in available 4x4 vehicles to the top of the mountain to
start our walk. The walk consists of a leisurely 3-mile flat loop
along a reclaimed strip mine site. Around noon we will be breaking
for a lunch of hot dogs cooked over an open fire. We will provide
the hot dogs, mustard, chili and onions - please bring along your own drinks, chips,
desserts, etc. A folding camp chair is nice to have along
also. Everyone is welcome and there is no cost for this
event. Please let us know if you are coming so we can plan
transportation and food. Look forward to seeing you there.
